I have spent quite a good amount of time working around websites, hosting services, servers, and the people who use them.

Over the years, I have seen different situations involving hosting customers, website owners, developers, and hosting companies. And there is something I have noticed repeatedly that needs to be talked about honestly.

A lot of people buy hosting services without really understanding what they are buying. They get a hosting plan, receive access to cPanel, and suddenly they have everything sitting right there.

File Manager. Databases. DNS. Email accounts. SSL. PHP settings. Cron jobs. Redirects. Subdomains. Domains. Security settings. Backups. Resource usage.

Because the options are available, some people start clicking, changing things without actually knowing what those settings do.

Then something breaks. The website stops working. Email stops delivering. A database becomes inaccessible. A domain stops resolving.

Something that was working perfectly yesterday suddenly stops working today. And the first person they blame is the hosting company.

Buying Hosting Does Not Automatically Make You a Hosting Expert

This is where we need to be honest with ourselves. When you buy a hosting service, you are buying access to infrastructure and services. You are not automatically becoming a server administrator.

Having cPanel access does not mean you should change every setting inside cPanel. Having access to DNS does not mean you should randomly modify DNS records. Having access to databases does not mean you should delete database tables without understanding them.

I have seen people click through PHP settings, change versions because someone on a forum mentioned it might help, then wonder why every plugin breaks.

I have seen DNS records changed by accident and an entire domain become unreachable. I have seen databases deleted that customers thought they could restore with one click.

Just because WordPress gives you administrator access does not mean every setting should be changed. There are settings that can completely break a website when incorrectly configured.

The control panel is not a playground.

The problem is not that people want to learn; learning is good. The problem is making changes without understanding what those changes can affect.

Some People Want Control Without Learning

I have noticed something else. Some people want complete control over their hosting account, but they do not want to learn how the system works.

They want to manage everything themselves, but when something goes wrong, they expect the hosting company to immediately understand what they changed and fix it for them.

That creates a difficult situation. You cannot reasonably expect someone else to take responsibility for every change you make to a system you control.

If you change five settings, install three plugins, modify DNS, change PHP settings, upload a script, and then your website stops working, it becomes very difficult to determine what caused the problem. Sometimes the hosting company genuinely has nothing to do with it.

I have worked with customers who made changes they did not understand, their site broke, and they were angry at the hosting provider before even investigating what went wrong.

I have also worked with hosting companies that used customer error as an excuse to avoid investigating real problems on their end.

Both happen.

But Hosting Companies Need To Take Responsibility Too

At the same time, I do not believe customers should always be blamed. Hosting companies have responsibilities too.

If the server is constantly going down, resources are being oversold, support is ignoring legitimate problems, backups are failing, infrastructure is poorly maintained, or the company is misleading customers about what their plan provides, customers have every right to complain.

A hosting company should not hide behind the excuse of customer error whenever something goes wrong. There are legitimate hosting problems. There are incompetent hosting providers. There are poorly configured servers. There are support teams that do not respond properly.

There are companies that sell services they cannot properly maintain.

So this is not about protecting hosting companies from criticism. It is about being fair when determining where the problem actually came from.

Not Every Problem Is A Hosting Problem

This is probably the biggest point I want people to understand.

Your website being down does not automatically mean your hosting company caused it. Your email not working does not automatically mean your hosting company is a scam. Your WordPress website showing an error does not automatically mean the server is bad.

Your website becoming slow does not automatically mean the hosting company is incompetent.

There are many possible causes. It could be your code, a plugin, a theme, a database problem, DNS, an incorrect configuration, a security issue, something you changed, or even an external service your website depends on.

And yes, it could also be the hosting provider.

The important thing is to investigate before reaching a conclusion.

The Scam Accusation Is Too Easy

The internet has made it very easy to call a company a scam. Something goes wrong, support does not respond immediately, and suddenly someone is online writing, ” This company is a scam; do not use them; they stole my money.

Sometimes the complaint is legitimate. But I have looked into many situations and discovered that the customer accidentally deleted something, changed a configuration, installed something incorrectly, exceeded their resources, or made another change that caused the problem.

Then the hosting company gets blamed publicly for something the customer actually caused.

That is not fair. A negative review can have real consequences for a business.

Before calling a company a scam, ask yourself some basic questions:

What exactly happened?

What did I change before the problem started?

Did I follow the documentation?

Did I contact support and explain the problem properly?

Did the hosting company actually cause the problem?

Did I give them enough information to investigate?

These questions can completely change the situation.

Support Is Not Magic

There is also an expectation that hosting support should instantly know what happened.

Sometimes a customer simply sends, ” My website is not working. That is it. No error message, no screenshot, no description, no information about what they changed, no domain.

Then they expect the support team to immediately diagnose everything.

Hosting support is not magic. The more useful information you provide, the easier it becomes to investigate the problem.

Instead of saying simply, ” My site is down, you can say, ” My website was working this morning, I changed the PHP version from 8.2 to 8.4 around 11:30 AM, and now I am getting a 500 error.

That single message gives a technician significantly more information to work with.

Learn The Basics Before Touching Important Settings

You do not need to become a server engineer before buying hosting. You do not need to understand Linux at an advanced level. You do not need to become a cybersecurity expert.

But if you are going to manage your own hosting account, learn the basics.

Understand what your control panel is, what your domain is, DNS at a basic level, what an SSL certificate does, what your database is, what PHP is, the difference between files and databases, and what backups are.

Understand what happens when you change a PHP version. Understand what a DNS record does before modifying one.

Most importantly, know what you are changing before you change it. If you do not understand a setting, there is nothing wrong with asking.

There is no shame in saying, I do not know how to do this. Ask your hosting provider, read the documentation, search for an explanation, hire a developer, talk to someone who understands servers.

What you should not do is randomly change things, break your website, and then immediately accuse everyone else.

Here Is What You Need To Do Right Now

Understand your settings. Before changing anything in cPanel or WordPress, learn what it does. Read documentation or ask. Do not change what you do not understand.

Back up everything. Before making any significant changes, back up your website and database. Most hosting companies provide automatic backups; verify yours are working and that you can restore from them.

Change one thing at a time. Do not change five settings and hope for the best. Change one, wait, check if anything broke, then move to the next. If something breaks, you know exactly what caused it.

Write down what you change. Keep a simple note of what you changed, when, and why. This information helps support teams investigate much faster if something goes wrong.

Ask for help when you need it. There is no shame in saying you do not know how to do something. Hire a developer. Contact a technician. Ask someone experienced. Do not randomly change things to see what happens.

The Mistakes I See Nigerian Site Owners Make

I have seen Nigerian website owners make the same mistakes repeatedly.

Changing PHP versions because someone on a forum said it would speed things up, without testing first. Clicking randomly in cPanel hoping to find performance improvements. Installing too many plugins without checking if they compete for resources.

Believing Nigerian web hosts are always scamming when things go wrong, without investigating what they actually changed. Pointing DNS at the wrong place and then blaming the hosting company when their domain stops working.

Running a website on the cheapest possible shared hosting and then expecting dedicated server performance.

The common thread is doing something without understanding the consequences.

Not all of these are the hosting company’s fault. Most of them are not.

Hosting Companies Need To Communicate Better Too

There is another side to this conversation. Customers should not be expected to understand everything. A good hosting company should educate customers where possible.

If a customer is doing something dangerous, explain it. If a configuration is likely to cause problems, warn them. If the problem is caused by something on their side, explain what happened instead of simply saying, ” It is your fault.

And when there is a genuine server-side problem, own it. Fix it. Communicate. Do not leave customers wondering what is happening.

A good hosting relationship should not be about the hosting company versus the customer. It should be the hosting company and the customer working together to keep the customer’s website running.

My Biggest Advice To Hosting Customers

Do not buy a hosting service and then treat the control panel like a playground. Do not click every option simply because you can see it.

Do not change settings because someone on Facebook or YouTube told you to without understanding what you are doing. Do not blame your hosting company before investigating what happened. And do not publicly call a company a scam simply because you experienced a technical problem.

At the same time, do not allow a hosting company to dismiss genuine problems as your fault without investigating them properly.

Be responsible. Ask questions. Learn. Keep backups. Document the changes you make. Investigate problems before assigning blame.

Technology is complicated enough without customers and hosting companies immediately turning every problem into a fight. Sometimes the problem is the customer. Sometimes the problem is the hosting company. Sometimes neither one is directly responsible.

The important thing is to find out which one it is before pointing fingers.

I am Desmond Henry.
