The following guide will give you an overview on how to configure additional\u00a0IPv4 addresses<\/a> on the most popular operating systems. We designed this article to be helpful not only for our HOGANHOST<\/strong> customers, but also for people using any other provider.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Getting Started<\/h2>\n

As an example, we will use\u00a0192.51.100.10<\/strong>\u00a0as the primary IP address and we will assume that the additional IP address is\u00a0192.51.100.42<\/strong>. As a general rule, we recommend configuring these addresses with a netmask of\u00a0255.255.192.0(\/18)<\/strong>\u00a0respectively\u00a0\/128<\/strong>\u00a0and without adding a new gateway.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re not sure about your admin rights in Linux, always enter the command sudo -i at the beginning of every session:
\nsudo -i<\/code><\/p>\n

This command will grant you the rights of a power user, so you don\u2019t have to write the command sudo at the beginning of every command line.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

<\/span>Default IP Configuration for Contabo Customers<\/h3>\n

Every server comes already pre-configured with one IPv4 and one IPv6 address. Additional IPv4 addresses can be ordered when placing an order for a new server through our homepage or by contacting us at support@hoganhost.com.ng<\/p>\n

Important:<\/em>\u00a0Additional IPv4 addresses will not be added to your system automatically but will have to be configured manually.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

<\/span>Arch Linux: Configuring Additional IP<\/h2>\n

Arch Linux<\/a>\u00a0network configuration file is stored in\u00a0\/etc\/systemd\/network\/eth0_STATIC.network<\/strong>. To open this file, we recommend using the text-editor \u201cnano<\/em>\u201d. Other editors, such as \u201cvim<\/em>\u201d will also work. The text-editor \u201cnano<\/em>\u201d is not pre-installed on Arch Linux. To install it, just execute the following command:
\npacman -S nano<\/code><\/p>\n

After installing \u201cnano<\/em>\u201d open the network configuration file with this command:
\nnano \/etc\/system\/network\/eth0_STATIC.network<\/code><\/p>\n

When opening the file for the first time, it will look like this picture:<\/p>\n

In order to add 192.51.100.42 to your server, you need to add another \u201cAddress<\/strong>\u201d entry at the end of the \u201c[Network]<\/strong>\u201d section. If you are a HOGANHOST customer, the exact values can be found in the email HOGANHOST sent you. If you are not a HOGANHOST customer, contact your provider. The edited file should look like this picture:<\/p>\n

<\/span>CentOS 7.x: Configuring Additional IP<\/h2>\n

CentOS has all its network interface configuration files stored in\u00a0\/etc\/sysconfig\/network-scripts<\/strong>. In order to configure additional IPv4 addresses, one virtual interface for each additional IPv4 address has to be created. The main interface is stored in \u201cifcfg-eth0<\/strong>\u201d. If the main interface is e.g.\u00a0ifcfg-eth0<\/strong>, the virtual interfaces would be named\u00a0ifcfg-eth0:0<\/strong>,\u00a0ifcfg-eth0:1<\/strong>,\u00a0ifcfg-eth0:2<\/strong>\u00a0and so on. To add additional IP addresses, it\u2019s required to create a new virtual interface. To do so, we are going to install the text-editor \u201cnano<\/em>\u201d first. It\u2019s also possible to use any other text editor, such as \u201cvim<\/em>\u201d, if you want to. The \u201cnano<\/em>\u201d editor is not pre-installed on CentOS 7.x. To install nano, use the following command:
\nyum install nano<\/code><\/p>\n

Now, navigate to the network interface configuration folder using the following command:
\ncd \/etc\/sysconfig\/network-scripts<\/code><\/p>\n

Create a new virtual interface with:
\nnano ifcfg-eth0:0<\/code><\/p>\n

The file will be created and opened with the text-editor \u201cnano\u201d. Now the following paragraphs must be added:
\nDEVICE=\u201deth0:0\u201d<\/code>
\nBOOTPROTO=\u201dnone\u201d<\/code>
\nONBOOT=\u201dyes\u201d<\/code>
\nIPADDR=\u201d192.51.100.42\u201d<\/code>
\nNETMASK=\u201d255.255.255.255\u201d<\/code><\/p>\n

Important:<\/em>\u00a0Values used in this article are just an example. The values for \u201cIPADDR<\/strong>\u201d and \u201cNETMASK<\/strong>\u201d can be found in the email Hoganhost sent you. If you are not a hoganhost customer the values should be provided by your provider.<\/p>\n

<\/span>FreeBSD 12.2: Configuring Additional IP<\/h2>\n

FreeBSDs network interface configuration is stored in\u00a0\/etc\/rc.conf<\/strong>. In order to configure additional IPv4 addresses, you need to add aliases. To do so, we are going to install the text-editor \u201cnano<\/em>\u201d first. Other editors, such as \u201cvim<\/em>\u201d are possible as well, but for this tutorial we will use \u201cnano\u201d. This editor is not pre-installed on FreeBSD. To install nano use the following command:
\npkg install nano<\/code><\/p>\n

Now open the network interface configuration file with:
\nnano \/etc\/rc.conf<\/code><\/p>\n

Go to the end of the document and create a new alias by inserting this line:
\nifconfig_vtnet0_alias1=inet 192.51.100.42 netmask 255.255.255.255<\/code><\/p>\n

Important:<\/em> If you are a hoganhost customer the values for \u201cinet<\/strong>\u201d and \u201cnetmask<\/strong>\u201d can be found in the email hoganhost sent you. Otherwise contact you provider regarding the exact values. We used our example-values here.<\/p>\n

If you want to add more than one additional IP address, use the same scheme, but carry on with alias2, alias3 and so on. After completing the instructions, save the file and restart your server with the following command:
\nreboot<\/code><\/p>\n

<\/span>Rocky Linux 8.4: Configuring Additional IP<\/h2>\n

To add additional IP addresses in Rocky Linux, you need to use the pre-installed tool nmtui.
\nLogin as root and use the following command to access the nmtui interface:

Use the arrow keys and\/or the [Tab] key to navigate in this menu. Make sure, that the IPv4 Configuration is set to \u201cManual<\/strong>\u201d, otherwise change it to \u201cManual<\/strong>\u201d. Navigate to the \u201c<Add\u2026><\/strong>\u201d section right below \u201cAddresses<\/strong>\u201d and hit [Enter]. Add your purchased additional IP address and put \u201c\/24\u201d as the subnet mask behind it.<\/p>\n

Important:<\/em> All information regarding your additional IP can be found in the email Hoganhost sent you. We use \u201c192.51.100.42<\/strong>\u201d as our example IP address. After switching the Mode to \u201cManual<\/strong>\u201d and adding your address, it should look like this picture:<\/p>\n

Use the arrow keys or the [Tab] key to navigate to \u201cOK<\/strong>\u201d. Now navigate to \u201cBack<\/strong>\u201d. Use the arrow keys or the [Tab] key to select the second menu option \u201cActivate a connection<\/strong>\u201d. Deactivate the selected connection and activate it again.\u00a0Important advice<\/em>: Sometimes it happens that the console freezes and you get disconnected from your server.<\/p>\n

If you are a HOGANHOST\u00a0 customer<\/em>, please login to your hoganhost dashboard and manually restart your server. If you\u2019re using a different provider<\/em>, login to your provider\u2019s dashboard and try to restart your server there or contact your provider directly.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

<\/span>Debian (10\/11) & Ubuntu (until 17.04): Configuring Additional IP<\/h2>\n

Debian\u2019s and Ubuntu\u2019s network interface configuration is stored in\u00a0\/etc\/network\/interfaces<\/strong>. Now we will open the network interface configuration with the text editor \u201dnano\u201d. To do so use this command:
\nnano \/etc\/network\/interfaces<\/code><\/p>\n

When opening the file for the first time it should look like this picture:<\/p>\n

In order to add 192.51.100.42<\/strong>\u00a0to your server, you need to copy the first block (framed in red) except the last line (starting at \u201cauto eth0<\/strong>\u201d; ending at \u201cdns-nameservers 231.136.95.11 231.136.95.10<\/strong>\u201d). Then paste the copied block with a little bit of spacing below as shown in the screenshot (The yellow framed block is the pasted one):<\/p>\n

Explaining the Screenshot: The red box contains all primary IP settings and 192.51.100.10 is your primary IP address. The yellow box contains additional IP settings. It\u2019s similar to the first box but the \u201caddress<\/strong>\u201d has been changed to the additional IP you\u2019ve bought. Now it\u2019s important to change the values for \u201caddress\u201d, \u201cnetmask<\/strong>\u201d and \u201cgateway<\/strong>\u201c. If you are a hoganhost customer<\/em> the exact values can be found in the email Hoganhost sent you. Otherwise contact your provider\u00a0<\/em>regarding the exact values.<\/p>\n

After completing the instructions, save the file and restart your server using the command:

<\/span>Ubuntu (17.10 and above): Configuring Additional IP<\/h2>\n

In Ubuntu beginning with version 17.10, you can find the network configuration in the file\u00a0\/etc\/netplan\/01-netcfg.yaml<\/strong>. With this method you can assign additional ipv4 addresses to the interface eth0. To do so, open the network configuration file with the following command:
\nnano \/etc\/netplan\/01-netcfg.yaml<\/code><\/p>\n

To add additional IP addresses to OpenSUSE, you need to use the pre-installed tool\u00a0YaST<\/em>. Login as root and use the following command to access the YaST interface:

Adding additional IP addresses on a\u00a0Windows server\u00a0is very easy compared to Linux operating systems. To get started, search for \u201cControl Panel<\/strong>\u201d in the Windows search bar.<\/p>\n

<\/span>cPanel: Configuring Additional IP<\/h2>\n

Adding additional IP addresses in\u00a0cPanel\u00a0is very easy. There is no need to deal with configuration files. Log in to\u00a0WHM (Web Host Manager)\u00a0by entering your IP address and the Port of cPanel which is usually 2087. Example:\u00a0http:\/\/YourIPAddress:2087<\/strong>. If you are a Hoganhost customer, you will get an email with your login data and a direct link to your control panel:<\/p>\n

After logging yourself in into the cPanel\/WHM Dashboard, use the search bar on the left to search for \u201cIP Functions<\/strong>\u201d and select \u201cAdd a New<\/strong>\u00a0IP Address<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n
